“I can’t even begin to tell you how much we all appreciated knowing we had the formidable force of nature that is Dr Ramon Martos on our side – and we’re all grateful for everything he did for us then, and continues to do now. Thank you, Ramon, from the bottom of our (healthy) hearts!”

“It was with a combination of fear and trepidation that I sent a desperate email to Burton Clinic on a Sunday night at the end of January 2016. My father in law had mentioned over lunch that he’d been suffering with shortness of breath and chest pains but ‘didn’t want to cause a fuss’! Coming from a family with a history of heart disease, I recognized the symptoms as potential angina – not a great thing to have when you’re an 85 year old man who relishes gardening and generally keeping fit. Dad was talking to his doctor about his pains, but was waiting 2-3 weeks between stages and I feared this might be too long.

I was relieved and impressed to get a phone call first thing the next day saying that we could have an appointment with Cardiologist Dr Ramon Martos that same afternoon, and we nervously waited, fearing the worst and feeling slightly overwhelmed.

Our nerves were evaporated within seconds of meeting the lovely Dr Martos; a warm smile, reassuring handshake and genuine concern about my father in law’s health meant we felt like we’d met a new friend (albeit a very clever one!) within seconds of being in his company.
He was able to ask the right questions in such a gentle way that my usually conservative and fiercely private father in law opened up and revealed that these pains has been going on for 9 months. Whilst I saw a small flicker of urgency in Dr Martos’ eyes, I don’t think my in-laws noticed and his manner and warmth remained consistent as he kicked into action.

Within half an hour, Dad had gone through a series of tests and was booked in for a cardiac angiogram that Friday at Stoke Hospital. It was made clear to us that we needed to find out what was going on fast, especially given Dad’s symptoms and his age. Dr Martos was hoping that he would be able to investigate and fit stents at the same time if it was needed…which we all agreed would be a fantastic result.

After waiting a short time on Friday, Dad came out earlier than expected from his procedure with Dr Martos and with no stents. Whilst we knew this could have meant there was nothing wrong, we feared that it could be bad news, and very quickly found out that it was. Dr Martos sat with Dad and I and very calmly explained that all three of Dad’s arteries were either completely or very nearly blocked, and beyond the stage where stents would help. Without being too dramatic, we understood very clearly that, without Dr Martos’ speedy diagnosis and intervention, Dad’s next ‘incident’ could well have been his last and the only course of action to prevent this was a tripe bypass.

Given Dad’s age, it wasn’t easy to find a surgeon willing to take the risk of major heart surgery, but Dr Martos persuaded leading heart surgeon Adrian Levine to meet with us on the next working day (Monday). This resulted in Dad undergoing surgery that Wednesday – just ten short days after our first meeting with Dr Martos. During that time, Dr Martos had met with us, emailed us or phoned us every day to check on progress and make sure things were going to plan. He even came into the hospital very early one day to do a test that no-one else could fit in – just massively going above and beyond the call of duty.

I’m thrilled to say that, 9 months later, my father in law is completely mended and full of life. He’s busy mowing the lawn, walking the dog, and doing the gardening without any aches or pains…in fact, he’s just returned from a Mediterranean cruise and is doing all the things he thought he might not get to do back in February.

That’s the long story. The short version is that, without this warm, clever, lovely, passionate man, my darling father in law would no longer be with us. I can’t even begin to tell you how much we all appreciated knowing we had the formidable force of nature that is Dr Ramon Martos on our side – and we’re all grateful for everything he did for us then, and continues to do now. Thank you, Ramon, from the bottom of our (healthy) hearts!”

In October 2016, I went into Glenfield Hospital for an angiogram and what proved to be a potentially lifesaving angioplasty procedure under the highly skilled care of Dr Martos. All the staff were very supportive and helpful during the time I was on Ward 32. Throughout the whole process, including all tests prior to the procedure, Dr Martos was very thorough, reassuring and open about all the possibilities and options as well as extremely empathetic towards my family.
I can highly recommend Dr Martos and his team at both Burton and Glenfield Hospitals for their support, understanding and professionalism during what was a very worrying time. Both I and my family would like to express our most sincere gratitude to Dr Martos for the successful outcome.
